Paskong Pinoy is one of the world's longest running Christmas celebrations, usually beginning as early as the arrival of the "-ber" months (September, October, and so on). Filipinos from all over spend this entire season with enormously rich yuletide traditions of merry-making observed up to the present day.

The yuletide celebration in the Philippines exemplifies the country's culturally diverse traditions. It is a blend of cultures, traditions and customs, cherished by both folk and Christian beliefs.

Paskong Pinoy is marked by rich Hispanic-influenced traditions such as the Belen, Misa de Gallo, and parol. Through the years of cross-cultural interactions, the Europeans and Americans brought the traditional chestnut roasting and white Christmas dreams of Filipinos. They introduced Saint Nicholas, carols, and Christmas cards. They brought Christmas trees and holly inside Filipino houses. Other significant practices observed during the Christmas season have been greatly influenced by Asian countries such as China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India. They made their mark with exotic cuisine, ethnic dances, fluvial parades, torch-lighting processions, oriental games, and firecrackers

Despite the dangerous increase of piracy on the high seas, Filipino sailors, who make up 40 percent of the world's shipping crews, are more fearful of the global financial crisis than getting hijacked.

STORY:
The Philippines provides up to 40 percent of the world with sailors. And Filipinos make up 127 of the 243 sailors still held captive by Somali pirates.

The increasingly brazen attacks by pirates off Africa's east coast were well known among the seamen, but they were still eager to get back to sea.

Up to 1,000 seafarers gather every day at a park in downtown Manila to look for available jobs offered by some 100 shipping and manning agencies.

Advertised salaries range from $1,300 to $12,600 U.S. dollars per month for varying crew positions, a far cry from Manila's minimum wage of USD $7.64 a day.

Many were anxious to nail down jobs since they fear the mounting global financial crisis will begin to bite next year.

[Mario Isagani Aniora, Seaman]:
"We're more scared of the global financial crisis - because that's what will hurt us if the opportunities for seafarers disappear -- compared to passing through Somalia. We're not scared of that.”

Most belittle the threat of hijacking.

[Richard Mendez, Seaman]:
"It's just a matter of timing. Sometimes it's your turn to face danger. And maybe the vessels lack security. Anyway the manning agencies know where there are hijackings, so why do they still send sailors there?"

Manning agencies say there could be as many as 20,000 jobs lost next year due to the global economic slowdown.

On September 21, 2008, it's been 36 years since former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos signed the declaration of Martial Law (which he announced on national TV on the 23rd, much to the surprise of everyone).

From the Foundation for Worldwide People Power (FWWPP), the makers of "Beyond Conspiracy: 25 Years after the Aquino Assassination," comes a documentary that was critically-acclaimed for its coverage about one of the darkest episodes in Philippine history when the whole nation suffered under the unmitigated oppression by the Marcos authoritarian rule.

Here's an excerpt from a review written 11 years ago (1997) by Mr. Hermie Garcia of "The Philippine Reporter" website:

Batas Militar A Must See For All

The two-hour long video was produced by Foundation for Worldwide People Power (FWWPP) headed by Eugenia Apostol, the founding publisher of The Philippine Daily Inquirer .

The extensive film footage and pictures of actual events that took place from 1972 when Marcos declared martial law, to the EDSA uprising of 1986 that toppled the dictatorship, bring back to life the monumental tyranny and deception, the unprecedented violence and unparalleled greed that no one ever imagined could possibly emanate from one man.

Tens of thousands were arrested and imprisoned without court charges, thousands were tortured and hundreds summarily executed. More than a year ago, ten thousand victims of human rights violations won a class suit in a U.S. court against the Marcos family. The court ruled that they be compensated by the Marcos estate with U.S. $2.25 billion.

Whether one is this far from the country or generations removed decades later, martial law remains a permanent scar in our collective consciousness as a people. The video documentary, 25 years later from martial law's imposition in 1972, is only one reminder. And it is a chilling grim reminder.

If only for that single accomplishment, the documentary has excellently served its purpose. But it is certainly more than that. It is solidly researched, done with more than 150 important personalities interviewed including President Ramos, Cory Aquino, some generals, Imelda Marcos, other key players and opposition leaders.

Particularly interesting was the focus on the personality and political savvy of Marcos' arch enemy Ninoy Aquino. He was clearly presented as the leader and icon of the anti-Marcos opposition, the martyr whose assassination triggered the demise of the dictatorship.

Aquino's tussles with Marcos were well chronicled: his privilege speeches in the Senate exposing the Jabidah massacre and the Oplan Sagittarius; his imprisonment and 40-day hunger strike; his valiant candidacy, while in prison, to the Batasang Pambansa; and his continued anti-Marcos activities in the U.S. All these were important in encouraging open opposition to the regime and hastening its downfall. All these lent color and drama to the unfolding historical events. And they were very effective in politicizing the heretofore-apolitical middle class and that segment of the elite who until then, could live with Marcos in power.

But martial law was certainly more than that. It was more than the life and death struggle between Marcos and his opponents in the traditional political opposition.

The video documentary certainly captured the drama of the era. But it is mostly the drama in stifling the elite opposition, like the Aquinos and the Lopezes. It's true they were jailed and they lost their properties and their chances to assume a dominant role in the ruling elite. And a number of other elite and middle class personalities were also imprisoned and tortured, some of them summarily killed. But those who suffered the most in terms of prolonged detention, severe torture and salvaging or summary execution, were the leaders and activists of the Left, the armed rebels, the organized workers in the cities and the peasant leaders and the masses in the rural areas.

Ninoy Aquino's hunger strike was the most famous during martial law. But there were prolonged hunger strikes by political detainees in Camp Bicutan, in Camp Crame, in Camp Aguinaldo, in Camp Olivas, in Cebu and Davao. While Aquino lost weight in his hunger strike, he had the attention of doctors who saw to it that he would not die and cause a terrible embarrassment for Marcos. The video production is a major step in documenting the abuses and the depredations of the Marcos martial law regime and in revealing its unparalleled violence and corruption.

Philippines navy divers who have entered the hull of a capsized passenger ferry say they have found many bodies, and no sign of survivors.

More than 800 people are believed to be trapped on board, but only 43 people are known to have survived.

Over 700 people remain missing after the "Princess of the Star" ferry in which they were traveling sank during typhoon Fengshen.
Rescuers are making their way through rough seas to search for missing people as the typhoon continues to rage. With winds of up to 120 miles per hour, Fengshen struck the central and northern Philippines on Saturday. A coast guard rescue ship reached the waters off Sibuyan Island, 300 kilometres south of Manila, where the MV Princess of the Stars sank after running aground.
A hole in the hull was seen as the ferry lay submerged about a kilometer and a half from the shore of Sibuyan. Weather has prevented rescuers from reaching nearby islands where survivors could have drifted.
A U.S. Navy ship from Okinawa, Japan, was expected to arrive early Tuesday near Sibuyan Island south of Manila, where the ferry sank.

Only 38 people had been rescued, including 28 passengers and crew members who came ashore Monday after drifting at sea since Saturday. One survivor recounted the sinking: "There were many children trapped inside the boat. I could hear them wailing before the boat sank," said Renato Lanorias, a crew member of the 23,824-ton ferry who survived by clinging to the rope of a life raft until he hit land, along with three others.
Lanorias said he could not forget the hundreds of bodies floating at sea and the cries for help from the victims as the ship keeled over and went under.
Princess of the Stars, owned by Sulpicio Lines, sailed from Manila at 8 a.m. on Friday on a 22-hour trip to Cebu City with 626 passengers and 121 crewmen. Among the passengers were 31 infants and 20 children.

Here the "Mambabasa" (readers or the singers) adapted the melody of "Jocelyn ng Baliwag, Magandang Diwata", a kundiman circa 1800.

The kundiman is a love song and/or a patriotic song that generally expresses lamentation, a longing, a plea, or sorrow. Influenced by the culture of the times and the temper of the Filipino, the kundiman's purpose was never trivial and ordinary. During the Spanish colonial regime, the kundiman, "Jocelyn ng Baliwag" was disguised as an expression of love for a lady from Bulacan; it was actually an expression of love for the motherland and the hope of setting her free from the Spanish conquistadores.

The kundiman's beat is triple time, in minor key, and its lyrics are poetic, swaying smoothly with either a silent note or a mezzo forte. It is usually sung by a highly trained and skilled vocalist, accompanied by an equally trained and skilled string orchestra, or a pianist, a violinist, and/or a guitarist. No; ordinary vocalists and musicians cannot perform the kundiman. It requires more than just a singing voice and the ability to pluck some strings. If other nations have their opera, the Philippines has its kundiman, uniquely its own.

The modern practice in Roman Catholic churches nowadays, as the ashes are being administered, is for the priest to say something like Turn away from sin and believe the gospel.

Keeping the mark
At some churches the worshippers leave with the mark still on their forehead so that they carry the sign of the cross out into the world.

At other churches the service ends with the ashes being washed off as a sign that the participants have been cleansed of their sins.

Symbolism of the ashes
The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes reminds each churchgoer that:

Death comes to everyone
They should be sad for their sins
They must change themselves for the better
God made the first human being by breathing life into dust, and without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes
The shape of the mark and the words used are symbolic in other ways:

The cross is a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism
The phrase often used when the ashes are administered reminds Christians of the doctrine of original sin

Chinese practices combined with Catholic faith in Philippines

MANILA: Around a million Chinese living in the Philippines are busy during this time of the year preparing for the Lunar New Year celebrations. Combining Chinese practices with the country's dominant Roman Catholic faith, hundreds of Chinese Catholics gathered for a special thanksgiving mass to welcome the Year of the Rat. Parishioners came in various shades of red and even priests were vested in red. Chinese liturgical songs that were translated from Filipino hymns reverberated throughout the church. Red Chinese lanterns added to the festive atmosphere as the congregation prayed for peace, joy and prosperity in the new year.

The liturgy ended with the Catholic Rite of Ancestor Veneration. One by one, parishioners came forward to light incense for their beloved dead.

Father Aristotle Dy, Executive Secretary, Chinese-Filipino Apostolate, said: "It's important for the overseas Chinese in the Philippines to continue preserving their culture, to have a link to their culture of origin. The church is able to play a role in that effort to preserve the culture by integrating the celebration of the most important Chinese festival within the celebration of the mass.

"It's very important to show people that there's no dichotomy or conflict between Chinese culture and the Catholic Christian faith. That's a problem we've had in history, where people considered the Catholic religion or the Christian faith as a foreign religion. We are trying to show people that the Catholic faith is universal."

After the mass, both young and old crowded for their share of lucky hong paos.

This union of the Chinese culture and the Catholic Christian faith have contributed to a much more meaningful celebration of the Lunar New Year for the Chinese in the Philippines.

Catholic missionaries are constantly finding ways to help the Chinese faithful take pride in their Chinese cultural heritage, and to find ways of integrating it with their Catholic faith.

That is why even colourful lions and dragons first paid respect at the sanctuary altar before proceeding with their spectacular performance.

Muro Ami is a film that depicts one of the worst forms of child labor in the illegal fishing system. Fredo is the ruthless captain of 150 Muro Ami divers. The illegal fishing is done by pounding and crushing corals underwater to scare the fishes and luring them towards the nets. With a high quota to meet, Fredo forces the divers mostly children, to accomplish at least eight dives a day to meet their goal before the millennium. Tired and harassed after the burdening task being given to them, the children have to make do in subhuman conditions in the Aurora, the Muro Ami boat. They sleep in rat-infested bunks and are fed only twice a day. Life above the boat is much worse than the suffering the children encounter beneath the sea. For every dive, a child's life is perilously in danger.

Manila, 21 Jan. (AKI ) - Philippine security forces were on high alert in Manila on Monday night ahead of mass protests expected to demand the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Thousands of people were expected to converge on the streets of the capital on Tuesday and march towards the Malacanang presidential palace to mark the anniversary of the infamous Mendiola massacre.

Extra police and soldiers were sent to Manila while in Caloocan, just north of the capital, police and soldiers were being deployed to prevent farmers from travelling from northern Luzon to take part in demonstrations.READ MORE>>>

Magsasaka sa Southern Luzon maglalakad patungo sa Mendiola

Gugunitain ng mga magsasaka mula sa Southern Luzon ang ika-21 anibersaryo ng Mendiola massacre sa pamamagitan ng anim na araw na paglalakad patungo sa San Miguel, Manila malapit sa Malacañang.

Sa ulat ng dzBB radio nitong Linggo, sisimulan ng mga magsasaka ang pagmartsa sa Enero 16 at inaasahan nilang mararating nila ang Mendiola sa Enero 22.

Matatandaan na 13 magsasaka ang namatay nang paputukan sila ng baril ng mga pulis na nagbabantay sa Mediola noong Enero 22, 1987. Ang mga nasawi ay kabilang sa may 10,000 magsasaka ang nagprotesta sa Malacanang upang hilingin kay dating Pangulong Corazon Aquino na ipatupad ang tunay na repormang agraryo.

Bukod sa mga magsasaka, inihayag ng Katipunan ng mga Samahang Mambubukid sa Timog Katagalugan, na makikiisa sa kanila ang mga mangingisda at iba pang sektor ng manggagawa.

Noong Disyembre, tatlong buwan na naglakad patungong Maynila ang mga magsasaka sa Sumilao, Bukidnon upang ipaglaban ang kanilang sinasakang lupa na nabili ng San Miguel Food Inc.

Inaasahan naman na magiging bantay-sarado sa Enero 22 ang Mediola dahil na rin sa naunang pahayag ni Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez na sa petsang ito isasagawa ang panibagong distabilisasyon laban sa pamahalaan.

Sinabi ni Gonzalez noong Sabado na ang impormasyon sa destabilisasyon ang dahilan kaya nagpalabas siya ng direktiba sa media upang hindi makasagabal sa magiging operasyon ng pulisya at militar.

Pinaalalahanan din ng kalihim ng mga tinatawag nitong “destabilizers" na huwag maliitin ang kakayahan ng pamahalaan.

Hindi naman malinaw kung bahagi ng sinasabing destabilisasyon ni Gonzalez ang nakatakdang protesta ng mga magsasaka. - GMANews.TV

PHOTO ESSAY-The Feast of Black Nazarene:A Day of Devotion

The Black Nazarene is a life-sized, dark-skinned statue of Jesus Christ that a priest bought in Mexico, carved by an Aztec carpenter. The image is now enshrined in the minor basilica in Quiapo, Manila, Philippines and the day on which devotees go to the church is Friday.

History

The statue was brought to Manila by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars in May 31, 1606. The image was enshrined at the first Recollect church in Bagumbayan (now part of the Rizal Park), which was inaugurated on September 10, 1606, and placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist.

In 1608, the second bigger Recollect church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino(Saint Nicholas of Tolentine ) was completed inside Intramuros (where the building of the Manila Bulletin now stands), where the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno was transferred. The Recollect Fathers then vigorously promoted devotion to the Suffering of Our Lord represented by the image that in fifteen short years, the Cofradia de Jesús Nazareno was established on April 21, 1621. The confraternity obtained Papal approval on April 20, 1650, from His Holiness Pope Innocent X.

Sometime in the year 1787, the Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santas Junta y Rufina, ordered transfer of the image of the Nazareno to the church in Quiapo, again providently placed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist.

The image survived the great fires that destroyed Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929, the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863, and the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during World War II.

Recently, however, in 1998, a replica of the original Black Nazarene was first paraded due to the repeated damages on the statue. Today this replica is still used in processions while the original rests inside the church, and other, even smaller replicas can be found in other churches.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- More than a million candidates took part in the Philippines' latest rambunctious exercise in democracy amid tight security Monday, seeking nuts-and-bolts posts that keep the country running.

The 120,000-strong Philippine police force was on full alert for the national holiday to guard against fraud and violence, with at least 23 candidates or followers killed since the election season began last month, police Director-General Avelino Razon Jr. said.

At sana bumalik sa inyong ala-ala na minsan nakita ko nga ito noon at "Mayroon nga palang ganito!" at magbalik sa iyong ala-ala ang mga payak nguni't di malilimutang magagandang kabanata ng iyong buhay ("Lalim ha. Kaya Mo'Yun!"). Para sa akin ang mga Pinoy ay tunay na malikhain anuman ang katayuan sa buhay at higit sa lahat likas na masayahin at sama-samang hinaharap ang hamon at pakikibaka ng buhay. This is from the show called Nova and the title of this particular segment is called "In The Path Of A Killer Volcano". It documents the happenings just before Mt. Pinatubo exploded to when the volcanoe finally erupted.

Mt. Pinatubo in Pampanga, Philippines, erupted in the early 90's leaving a catastrophic effect. The Aeta natives, as shown in these pictures, who used to live within the surroundings of the volcano, were forced to come down. Refusing to adapt urban ways of living, they continue to live in poverty at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)has been fighting the Philippines goverment in Mindanao, the eastern-most island of the country, for decades in a conflict born of ethnic, clan and religious complexity.

A four-year-old ceasefire has been in place, but is starting to quiver following July's ambush of the marines by Muslim fighters.

Veronica Pedrosa spent time with the Marines on Basilan Island and has this report.
